DigiPrime® 70030 to DigiPrime® 040 Primer Transition Guide

SUBSTRATE & OPV COMPATIBILITY

Broadly speaking, DP040 works on the same material types as DP70030, and delivers similar OPV compatibility and performance in end-to-end post applications. It is recommended that customers conduct their own tests to determine the suitability of such products for their particular purposes.

PRESS AND ILP SETTINGS

Only change press settings if necessary. Start with your existing substrate settings for DP70030, and refer to the Priming Guidelines for HP Indigo Labels and Packaging Digital Presses How-to Guide, as well as the user manual for your press. Make note of existing settings prior to any change, and only change one setting at a time. This will help identify which changes are most effective for your application, and make it easier to revert to previous settings.

To optimize performance within a given material family (e.g., polyethylene), it is possible that certain press settings may need to be adjusted. These include:

PRODUCT TRANSITION PROCEDURE

Switching from DP70030 to DP040 on press requires only routine cleaning:

  1. Remove the current primer.
  2. Perform a press-automated wash up.
  3. Clean the press as if it were being left idle over a weekend.
  4. Add DP040.

PRIMER COAT WEIGHT

DP040 is typically applied at about 1 wet gsm (Low or Medium setting when combined with a 74mm standard coating roller), similar to DP70030, though depending on the type of substrate, a higher coat weight may be recommended. Please refer to the latest version of Priming Guidelines for HP Indigo Labels and Packaging Digital Presses How-to Guide for more information on adjusting primer coat weight.

DIFFERENCES IN PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

DP70030 and DP040 are both water-based with similar solids content. While DP70030 continually becomes more viscous over time, DP040’s lower and narrower viscosity window simplifies maintenance by eliminating the need for viscosity adjustments.
