Guidelines for Using DigiPrime® 680 for HP Indigo WS6X00 Series Digital Presses

Cleaning Procedure

If the upgrade kit is installed and before using DigiPrime® 680, the in-line priming unit must be perfectly cleaned because Michem® In-line Primer 030 (ILP 030) and DigiPrime® 680 are not compatible. The cleaning procedure may take 4 to 8 hours and must be carried out carefully.

Substrate Selection Guide

Please refer to HP validated materials for more updated information or contact Michelman.

  • Coated and uncoated papers
  • Metallized substrates

CLEANING PROCEDURE FROM ILP 030 TO DP680

  1. Use the standard cleaning procedure from HP for Michem® In-line Primer 030 with the cleaner Michem® Clean 1188 (MCL1188).
  2. Remove the cleaner and replace with deionized water.
  3. Reactivate the cleaning procedure.
  4. Clean every roller which was in contact with Michem® In-line Primer 030 manually with hot water or IPA. Clean and remove the tray. Replace the tubes carrying the primer and thoroughly clean the valve.
  5. Clean again and flush with deionized water. Make sure there is no residual Michem® In-line Primer 030 in the system.
  6. Flush the system one time with DigiPrime® 680.
  7. Clean the system again with water.
  8. Fill the system with DigiPrime® 680.

You are now ready to run DigiPrime® 680.

Packaging

DigiPrime® is only available in boxes of 4 bottles, each bottle containing 5 liters of product.

STORAGE OF LIQUID DIGIPRIME® 680

DigiPrime® 680 is a water-based, press-ready primer. It is very stable, with a shelf life of 12 months if stored unopened at moderate temperatures above 5°C. The primer must be protected from freezing. If frozen, it is possible that grit or gels may be found in the product and it should not be used.

Primer in the In-Line Priming Unit

Quantity of Primer and Cleaning Solutions

In the in-line priming unit on the Indigo machine, there are two 7-liter tanks. One tank should be filled with 5 liters of deionized water and one should be filled with 5 liters of primer (DigiPrime® 680). Each appropriate tank should be filled with the contents of one bottle (5 liters) and not more in order to avoid any overflow in the machine.

Normally, in-line primer cleaning cycles prevent the primer from drying on the coating rollers. If the primer happens to dry and forms an insoluble film for any reason, use IPA or hot water to remove the dried primer from the coating rollers.

Primer Consumption Average

Assuming a 4 color print, consumption should be approximately 75 liters per month (~20 liters per week) of DigiPrime® 680, which is one box.

Press Settings

For successful priming of your substrate and good adhesion of the ink, it is important to follow HP recommendations about the PUW settings and to check the following parameters:

  • Corona settings
  • Coating: amount of primer applied (low, medium, or high)
  • Drying instructions
  • Cleaning cycle

Quality Check

Checking the Primer Adhesion

DigiPrime® 680 is a water-based, press-ready primer. It is very stable, with a shelf life of 12 months if stored unopened at moderate temperatures above 5°C. The primer must be protected from freezing. If frozen, it is possible that grit or gels may be found in the product and it should not be used.

Use a combination of Michem® Indicator 102 solution and the tape test:

  1. Apply tape (3M Scotch 810) smoothly to the primed surface without wrinkling.
  2. Apply sufficient pressure using a 2Kg roller evenly along the tape. Run the roller back-and forth two times.
  3. Wait 20 minutes before peeling the tape. After removing tape, check substrate surface for primer removal.
  4. Verify presence of primer by applying the above mentioned primer indicator in the peeled area. If there is primer adhesion, it will change appearance from yellow to blue.
Checking the Ink Adhesion
  1. Ink Adhesion can be verified with the same method used to verify primer adhesion (FINAT FTM21).
  2. Wait for 15 minutes after printing before applying tape to the printed surface.
  3. Wait 20 minutes before peeling the tape. After removing tape, check substrate surface for ink removal.
  4. Result should be 86% of the ink adhesion (3 star level).
