VaporCoat® recyclable water-based coatings confer high barrier properties to paper-based packaging and wraps. VaporCoat® hinders water vapor transmission so perishables stay fresh, frozen goods remain intact, and sensitive contents arrive in factory condition. For greater food safety and preservation, select VaporCoat® grades can also inhibit contaminants ordinarily found in recycled paper from migrating into packaged dry food.
One of our most versatile coating families, VaporCoat® can be used in most applications that require food contact compliance and don’t need cold set gluing. VaporCoat® can be applied via flexo, gravure, rod, blade, roll, or spray coater.
Because certain VaporCoat® grades are overcoatable, they can be "double-bumped" or paired with other coatings, including other VaporCoat® grades, to impart additional properties or achieve higher levels of performance.
The VaporCoat® family plays an important role in balancing a packaging structure’s sustainability with performance. These water-based coatings can act as a substitute for wax or polyethylene, allowing for mono-material constructions and conferring increased moisture vapor protection.
When tested in typical constructions, select grades of VaporCoat® have been certified recyclable by the Fibre Box Association and have passed PTS cat ii. For specific details, please contact us.
When packaging fresh-caught seafood in ice, or shipping flash-frozen proteins, it’s critical that the meat releases without fiber pull. A combination of two VaporCoat® grades creates a highly effective wax replacement solution for corrugated board. VaporCoat® 501 imparts water resistance and a moisture vapor barrier. This is overcoated with VaporCoat® 2200R, which further enhances those properties and adds oil and grease resistance, providing an environmentally-friendly alternative to curtain coated materials, poly-laminated board, and plastic bags.
Bakers in both at-home and mass production applications—like a cafeteria or dorm—depend on their food to not stick to the packaging when prepared and served. Used as a topcoat on paper, corrugated trays, and other surfaces, VaporCoat® allows cakes and other baked goods to release easily from surfaces without impeding their recyclability or food contact compliance.
When enjoying a night of takeout, the last thing consumers want is a greasy, soggy carryout carton. Including VaporCoat® in your packaging structure adds additional grease and moisture protection to paper-based packaging.
VaporCoat® can replace the polystyrene foam in retail protein packages and enable a recyclable alternative to the small plastic punnets that hold produce like cherry tomatoes and leafy greens. It helps protect food from moisture vapor and enables a clean release without compromising the recyclability of the package.
Select VaporCoat® grades can be applied over ink to function as an overprint varnish (OPV), protecting the printed surface. When used in combination with other coatings as part of an integrated system, the additional moisture barrier provided by VaporCoat® makes it possible to achieve a recyclable paper structure with high barrier performance, suitable for use with dry goods such as coffee and chocolate.
This type of integrated coating system, utilizing VaporCoat® 1300, is available today in both metallized and non-metallized high-barrier recyclable paper structures.
